IV. Philosophy of Teaching
I deeply believe in challenging students to approach learning with a sense of enthusiasm, exploration, and willingness to embrace creative challenges. When you expect a high level of academic performance from students and give them a rigorous structure that is reinforced with positivity, they rise to the occasion.
Purpose of Social Studies
This is a video that the American School of Bangkok used to introduce our school community to the general purpose, specific goals, and institutional structure of Social Studies classes. My opinion is that the general purpose of any history class is to study the past, but it is in order to understand our present and prepare for the future. The specific goals of any Social Studies class is to integrate as many other disciplines as possible (ex: economics, geography, linguistics, philosophy, political science, psychology, and sociology) by layering them onto the study of history to give students the tools to better understand the present and prepare for the future.
Ways to Support Students
The most important element of a classroom is the student, so I want to choose professional areas of focus based that can have a positive impact on students. Below are six major focus areas where I spend time developing materials and seeking professional development to support students.
Setting positive and forward-thinking behavior expectations.
Supplementing curriculum.
Using best practices.
Building a strong reading culture.
Communicating simply the most complicated standards.
Implementing technology.
