History of Common Core Standards
Below are highlights from Common Core State Standards Initiative, an organization whose website is the best place on the web to find out more about Common Core. If you are interested in researching the Common Core program further, please click here.
Forty-five states, the District of Columbia, four territories, and the Department of Defense Education Activity have adopted the Common Core State Standards.
“The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.”
“Building on the excellent foundation of standards states have laid, the Common Core State Standards are the first step in providing our young people with a high-quality education. It should be clear to every student, parent, and teacher what the standards of success are in every school.”
Common Framework Documents
Here are other useful documents related to the Common Core State Standards Initiative. The major emphasis of the framework is implementing the non-fiction and argumentative elements of the Common Core. Specifically, the Pacing Guide helps lay out when we execute lessons, assignments, assessments, and curriculum, the Writing Pacing Guide helps us assign diverse writing to students in a balanced way so they build their skills in all areas, and the Grade 9 Common Core Guide bundles all imaginable information about the goals and practices of the Common Core.
